چکیده

Possible springs and their deposits are important targets for Martian exploration because of the information they contain about Martian landscapes and processes, provide indications for conditions in the Martian hydrosphere, are potential habitats for past (and present) Martian organisms, and their resource potential for human missions. The Dalhousie Mound Spring Complex (DMC) is one of largest groundwater discharge landforms known on Earth and is an excellent field laboratory to develop models of spring related landform evolution on both Earth and Mars. The DMC also allows development of recognition criteria for spring deposits at the scale of satellite, lander, and microscopic scales, and issues associated with their exploration.

Recognition Criteria of Spring Deposits on Mars at All Scales: Evidence from the Dalhousie Springs Analog (australia)

Introduction: Potential martian spring deposits are of considerable interest [1, 2] as indicators of water and the nature of the subsurface environment and as possible sites for preserved evidence of microbial communities. They are therefore attractive targets for exploration with Rovers, sample return missions [3], and eventually crewed exploration. The Dalhousie Springs Complex (DSC) in centr...

Mound Spring Complexes in Central Australia: an Analog for Martian Groundwater Fed Outflow Channels?

Introduction: The arid inland of Australia contains a diversity of landscapes and landscape processes, often of great antiquity, extending back to the Mesozoic and Paleozoic. The potential of this landscape as a source of Mars analogs has, however, been little explored. The few examples studied so far include radiation-tolerant microbes in thermal springs [1] and hematite-silica hydrothermal al...

Terrestrial Glacial Processes: Analogs for Martian Polar Landform Development

Introduction: Since the Viking and Mariner 9 missions of nearly a quarter of a century ago provided global coverage of the Martian landscape at resolutions of 100-150m/pixel, a plethora of science related information pertaining to Mars and its landscape have become available to the scientific community. This information includes comprehensive global topography (MOLA), both low (Viking) and high...

Models of Formation and Activity of Spring Mounds in the Mechertate-Chrita-Sidi El Hani System, Eastern Tunisia: Implications for the Habitability of Mars

Spring mounds on Earth and on Mars could represent optimal niches of life development. If life ever occurred on Mars, ancient spring deposits would be excellent localities to search for morphological or chemical remnants of an ancient biosphere. In this work, we investigate models of formation and activity of well-exposed spring mounds in the Mechertate-Chrita-Sidi El Hani (MCSH) system, easter...

Pedosedimentary Evolution and Site Formation Processes in Mirak Mound 8, South of Semnan

Mirak is one of the open-air Paleolithic sites in the Iranian Central Plateau and the only Iranian archaeological open-air site which has been excavated extensively. The site is comprised of 8 mounds, located in a dry floodplain some kilometers south of Semnan in the northern fringes of the Iranian Central Desert, aka. Dash-I Kavir. Mirak mound no. 8 was selected for the excavation. The mound i...
